Camel-hair brush

A camel-hair brush is a type of paintbrush with soft bristles made from natural hairs, usually from a squirrel. Camel hair is not a suitable material, but historically was used for ancient Chinese ink brushes and for camel hair cloth. The camel-hair brush is widely used in art, but considered inferior to the more expensive sable and ox-hair brushes. The camel-hair brush is more ideal for some niche applications, such as pinstriping. The brushes have numerous uses outside of art. For example, dusting where a soft brush is needed for delicate objects or skin.
==Construction and properties==
Traditionally, squirrel hair is the most common material used for the bristles of camel-hair brushes.〔 The bristles can also be made from goat, ox, pony or a blend of any of these.〔(Brush Hair Types ), Dick Blick Art Materials, accessed and (archived ) 1 November 2015.〕 Camel-hair brushes are never fully or partially made from camel hair.〔Helen D. Hume, ''The Art Teacher's Book of Lists'', 6.2.3 "Brushes", John Wiley & Sons, 2010 ISBN 0470877820.〕
Camel-hair brushes are soft. They are a considerably cheaper alternative to the expensive kolinsky sable-hair brush (a red sable), which is considered the best brush for watercolor painting. However, they are inferior to the kolinsky brushes because they lack the springiness and natural point of the red sable.〔Chuck Long, ''Watercolor Success!: 52 Essential Lessons for Creating Great Paintings'', p. 14, North Light Books, 2005 ISBN 1581805535.〕
Cheap camel-hair brushes, such as those used as school supplies, are usually mass-produced from pony hair cut from the mane. Pony hair is used because the long mane hairs can be cut up by a machine to produce many brushes simultaneously. However, the cut ends are not as good at coming to a point as the natural tips.〔(Choosing the Proper Brush ), Rex Art, accessed and (archived ) 1 November 2015〕
